Breeding

We began considering breeding Belgian sheepdogs just a few years ago. Our dogs have always caught the attention of other competitors where ever we trial in agility, herding, and obedience. Many wondered why there are not more of this versatile breed seen in these venues. We're not sure. But we are committed to try improving the numbers of Belgian sheepdogs doing useful work and competing in sports. Our efforts include mentoring other Belgian owners in performance activities, making sure our own dogs represent the breed well, and now, producing Belgian sheepdogs with stable temperament and robust health. While we enjoy showing our dogs in the conformation ring, we place greater importance on working capability than fashionable type. While many Belgian sheepdog breeders are going to European imports for a more "refined" head and body structure, we are seeking out potential breeding stock from lines that have been in America for many generations. It seems presumptuous for us as first time breeders to think we can make important advances to "improving" the breed. We'll feel successful if we can maintain an American line that is proven to be healthy, sociable, structurally sound.
The very first Obsidian litter is planned for late 2009 or early 2010. After more than a year of pedigree research, meeting dogs, and talking to breeders, we selected a puppy from Laura and Jerry Hilton. If all goes according to plan, Kaponomana Heart of Obsidian (or just Heart to her friends) will be the dam to our first puppies once she passes her health screenings and further performance assessment. The sire will be announced in a few months.
Our Rogue ( Rogue Gaia Kuymal OA OAJ OF HTADII AD) was mated to a wonderful bitch, Attra Dea's Living the Dream in 2007 and produced eight beautiful puppies. Breeders should feel free to contact us if you are interested in using Rogue.
All dogs and bitches used in our breeding program will have hip and elbows evaluated by OFA or PennHip, CERF examinations, and will have achieved success in one or more performance areas. Puppies will be sold under contract to screened purchasers only.
